Crossroads Village

With its 34 historic structures, captures a simpler time. Friendly villagers in period dress welcome you to the homes, mills and shops. The blacksmith is busy at his forge and the printer is publishing the latest news. The doctor has herbal remedies and the lawyer’s office will give you legal advice, circa 1860.

Genesee County’s fascinating history comes to life in the restored, working community of Crossroads Village. Demonstrations of skills such as blacksmithing, spinning, fancywork, wood stove cooking and broom making will help you relive that bygone era. Wander through 30 historic buildings and shops including Michigan’s oldest operating gristmill, a picturesque cider mill, and an authentic blacksmith shop. Be sure to stroll down Main Street where you can browse in the well-stocked General Store and catch up on local gossip at the old-time Barber Shop. Kids will enjoy the Toy Barn with its collection of vintage toys and they can also try rolling a hoop or walking on stilts. Children and adults will be delighted by the Village’s 1910 Parker ‘Superior’ wheel. The Ferris wheel and the 1912 Parker Carousel, with its beautifully restored prancing horses, are in the Village's lakeside park. All ages will enjoy a cruise aboard the beautiful Genesee Belle, a genuine paddle wheel riverboat. Visitors will also enjoy live entertainment on the stage of the Victorian Colwell Opera House, located on the second floor of the Horton-Colwell Building, an impressive brick building also housing the General Store and an official United States Post Office. The highlight of your visit will be a trip aboard the steam-powered Huckleberry Railroad, Michigan’s only authentic narrow-gauge rail line.

The Huckleberry Railroad

The Huckleberry Railroad was so named because it ran so slow; a person could jump off the train, pick huckleberries and jump back on the train with minimum effort. The Huckleberry Railroad began its history in 1857 as part of the Flint Pere Marquette Railroad Company. The Flint Pere Marquette Railroad Company was organized on June 22, 1857. The branch of the Pere Marquette from Flint to Otter Lake (15 miles) was constructed under the Flint River Railroad Charter and opened in 1872. It was later known as the Otter Lake Branch. Eventually the track was extended to another 4.5 miles from Otter Lake to Fostoria, for a total of 19.5 miles from Flint to Fostoria.
