Soo Locks
Today there are 4 American locks. Boat cruises take tourists on trips at Sault Sainte Marie through the 21-foot drop between Lake Superior and Lake Huron water levels. Ships going to and from Lake Superior can also be observed at the De Tour Passage, the beginning of the Saint Mary's River, formed by DeTour Village and Drummond Island , (which is connected to the mainland by ferry service).
Sault Ste. Marie is the most popular vacation destination in Michigan's rugged Upper Peninsula; for good reason. From the world-famous Soo Locks and our maritime museums and attractions, to the spectacular natural beauty of Agawa Canyon and Tahquamenon Falls, the Sault continues to be The Gathering Place for four-season sightseeing and relaxation. Vegas-style gaming casinos, fine dining, unique shops and historical attractions just add to the fun.
Drummond Island
Currently home to about 1200 people, Drummond Island is a natural paradise. We have so many available activities, interesting things to do and see, it is very hard to get to all of them during one season. Over two-thirds of the island is state land, so there is lots of access to the outdoors. Whether you are just getting out into nature, or "out of a rough", getting lulled to sleep by lapping waves, or wiping the snow off your visor, we keep visitors busy and coming back. Fishing, Golf, Snowmobiling, Hunting, Nature Touring, Boating, Hiking, Mountain Biking, come on up an see why the British were reluctant to give up our island until 1823.
Some Favorites of Drummond Island:
Big Shoal Bay - Big Shoal is a beautiful sandy beach on the southern edge of the island. A wonderful place to come and relax, catch some rays, and go for a swim. A must visit!
The Maxton Plains - The Plains are teaming with flowers, animals, and all sorts of wildlife. Due to the fragility of this globally rare natural area, please stay on the roads or existing
trails. The soils are very thin and easily disturbed. Please tread lightly.
The Drummond Island Historical Museum - These are the collection of local historical items, including Native American artifacts, old family portraits and period furniture donated by year round and summer residents. Artifacts from Fort Drummond, which was occupied by the British and was, in fact, the last British holding in the United States, are also a part of the museum.
