Lake St. Helen is Roscommon County's best-kept secret. You won't have any trouble catching fish in the 8-9 inch range on this man-made lake covering 2930 acres. You will have your pick of crappie, largemouth, northern pike and walleye. There is even a bluegill tournament every year. Just put your boat in the water and tie it up at your private dock. You're ready to catch those fish before they even wake up in the morning. If fly-fishing is more your speed you can't do better than the AuSable River. The headwaters of the southern branch of the AuSable begin at Lake St. Helen. Want to hike? Red Pine Natural Area Pathway Trailhead is 8 miles North of St. Helen via F-97 and Sunset Road. There is even a sandy beach for the kiddies less than a quarter mile away.
